Starling Whitehead & Lux Architects is a proven design firm of talented individuals that strive to create meaningful architecture through a dynamic and interactive process which meets our numerous academic, civic, federal and other institutional clients' functional needs, supports their aspirations, and enhances the environments in which they live and work.

The focus of our practice is primarily in the public sector where we have completed new and renovation projects ranging in scope from small remodels to major new buildings with budgets in excess of $50 million.

Our history

Retired principals Keith Schreiber and Phillip Lane established the firm in 1987, continuing a professional relationship that began in 1981.  Since our founding, the focus of our work has been almost entirely on projects that result in socially responsible and human-focused public architecture. We enjoy public design as we believe that every project represents an opportunity for architecture to transform civic institutions into vibrant centers of community life.  We create buildings that knit themselves into the fabric of their communities.

Our design process

We pride ourselves on our commitment to responsive service and quality design, delivered on time and within budget.  We pinpoint the specific needs of our clients, and customize our management and communication techniques to achieve successful solutions both for our clients and our communities.  Our process derives its strength through an inclusive and interactive project partnership with the building users and their attendant supporting operations.

In addition to our technical knowledge and experience, we bring an attitude of openness guided by the belief that each stakeholder can and must be permitted to make positive contributions which, when combined together, total greater than the sum of their individual parts.  It is our first and continuing task as designers to listen to, and be receptive to, the wealth of ideas that the building users bring to each project.  We know some of those ideas are clear and ready for development.  We also understand that often those ideas need a supportive forum, a well run meeting, or a fast and accurate technical response to cohere and be ready for use.
